Dramatic Standoff at Long Beach Church Leaves Officer Injured, Suspect Dead
Long Beach, CA – A tense standoff at a North Long Beach church culminated in a shootout on Tuesday, resulting in a police officer being shot in the arm and the suspect fatally wounded. The officer has since been treated and released, while authorities continue to investigate the incident.
The confrontation began around 3:15 p.m. when officers responded to reports of an armed individual outside a church near Atlantic Avenue and 52nd Street. Despite attempts to communicate, the individual remained uncooperative, prompting the involvement of specialized mental health officers, negotiators, and SWAT units.
After a 2.5-hour standoff, the situation escalated into an exchange of gunfire involving the suspect and approximately four officers. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and a firearm was recovered. The injured officer, a senior member of the force, is expected to make a full recovery.
