Tap'N With Inglewood Rapper Dizzy
Today we’re Tap’n with Inglewood rapper Dizzy.
Hi Dizzy, let’s start with your background. Tell us about your story and how you got where you are now.
Dizzy: I’ve been involved with music since I was a young child, Joshua Theocharides, before I was called Dizzy. I kept writing and building myself as an artist over the years. I started writing around the age of nine, and started recording myself at age 12. I made my first music video around 17 or 18. For as long as I can remember I knew this is what I wanted to do with my life. Since then I’ve just been balancing hustle and rap. That’s the story of my life.
Wow. So you’ve really been at this for a long time. What has been your biggest obstacle in your journey as an artist so far?
Dizzy: Blindly investing in my career knowing I might not see a return. I think that’s what makes the difference though. I’m constantly investing in my craft, and although I don’t always get the intended results, I always find a sense of satisfaction and pride knowing that i genuinely gave it my all. And yes, that means putting the money behind what you call your art. Mind you I got bills and responsibilities just like the next man. But it’s been times I ain’t have much to my name and still Invested all I had in hopes of seeing my career progress further. I see so many artists get mad about not having support and whatnot from the fans, but these same artists ain’t never spent a dime on they career. How you expect the next person to genuinely fuck wit your movement if you aren’t even invested yourself. Usually just means you don’t even believe the bullshit you tryna sell either…
You’re really preaching today! You’re going to go far with that mindset. Investing in yourself is so important, it really sets the tone for the energy other's give you back. What other lessons have you learned?
Dizzy: Just because the rest of the world hasn’t realized your potential yet does not mean you are not great; timing is everything. This shit ain’t for the weak. And people are only as fake as you let them be. Through it all, keep your intentions pure and take everything with a grain of salt, even your own successes. Humility is key.
Aside from your mindset, what would you say sets you apart from other artists?
Dizzy: I don’t really have a lane. I hate putting myself in a box. I might not put all of it out to the public, but I’ve never limited myself when it comes to subject matter and song content. I’ll write about anything, any genre, damn near any sound. I feel like most artists though, specifically in rap, shy away from certain genres or topics cause it doesn’t really fit their style of rap. Me personally I just see it as a way to sharpen the blade. I don’t wanna be great at just hustlin rap, or gangsta rap, or anything specific for that matter. I wanna be great at everything I put the pen to without limitations.
We look forward to hearing some of that “out of the box” music, it’s dope when artists experiment with new sounds. Tell us more about your music. How would you describe your sound?
Dizzy: It’s a breath of fresh West coast air. I honestly feel like I have a little something for everybody. Versatile and real. You can hear the hunger in my music. You can feel my emotion. And I’m really telling my story.
Authenticity will take you far! Are there any artists you can compare yourself to?
Dizzy: The Game, Nipsey, 50 Cent, Gucci, DJ Quick, Meek Mill, Styles P, and Young Jeezy.
That’s quite a diverse list. If you would work with any artists, who would you pick?
Dizzy: Blxst, Larry June, 03 Greedo, Icewear Vezzo, Kalan frfr, EST Gee, Peezy, Jay Worthy, The Game, Gucci, DJ Quick, Lauryn Hill, and Mary J Blige.
Impressive list. Tell us, what are your plans for the future?
Dizzy: To continue to pursue my dreams to the fullest and bring my team and label mates up with me (RMPIIRE inc). I wanna see everybody in my circle win cause we all done seen each other grind and sacrifice for this shit for so long. We all got so much potential it’s just a matter of time now. Outside of the music, I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset. I wanna get my hands in a lot of different businesses involving everything from retail clothing to legal marijuana strains and dispensaries. Plus, continue to grow and expand the production company I started a few years ago: Toon Life Productions LLC.
What else motivates you and keeps you going and how do you define success?
Dizzy: My son. Just wanting better for him, that’s all the motivation I’ll ever need. I define success as maintaining a genuine happiness with the art you put out. Fuck the critics, fuck the analytics, fuck the uncertainty.. success is a mindset.
Beautiful! Tell us something that might surprise people about you.
Dizzy: Besides rapping, I actually enjoy a lot of the production work done behind the scenes. In my spare time I make beats and direct and edit some of my own music videos as well.
That’s dope! You’re a creative all the way around. Do you have any projects coming out we can look out for?
Dizzy: I just recently released a project titled “ALL NECESSARY SCHEMES” in all digital stores, plus various music videos. I’m currently working on multiple new collab EPs with various artists and solo albums to be dropped next year.
Dizzy, leave us with something you want people to know about you and tell everyone how they can find you.
Dizzy: Growth is extremely important to me. This rap shit is almost second nature at this point. I’ve been doing it damn near my whole life. But the experiences and opportunities I’ve made along the way is what I’ve learned from most in this journey. When the music stops, how have you really left your mark on the world. That’s what matters. And when you rap about the oppressions of the world you also have to be the change you wish to see in it. I’ll be doing my third annual toy drive this year, and as proud as I am, that’s merely the tip of the iceberg of the plans I have for giving back to the communities as I continue to grow in my career. Each one teach one.
