In a surprising outcome, California voters have rejected Proposition 32, which sought to raise the state’s minimum wage to $18 an hour. Nearly 51% of voters said “no” after two weeks of ballot counting. The proposition would have raised wages for large employers to $17 in 2023 and $18 in January 2024, with smaller employers following suit in 2026. Despite the rejection, California’s minimum wage will still increase to $16.50 in January, tied to inflation.
